Planning: classification

    Who are the bbfc?
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), before 1985 known as British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organization, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the United Kingdom.
    What rating is are film?
I believe that are film would be rated a 15, as a 15 is described as by the bbfc "No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age."
A 15 can include any of these:

    •   strong violence
    •  frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
    •   portrayals of sexual activity
    •   strong verbal references to sex
    •   sexual nudity
    •   brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
    •   discriminatory language or behaviour
    •   drug taking

I believe that are film would come under this rating as later on in the film we would try to include an actual crash scene, this would include a shot of the driver injured with some blood and gore. We would also have strong language and there might be some form of drug taking involved, these are all seriotypical iconograpys of a race film/ any sport film.

Planning: scripting

There will not be many lines that are filmed, there will be the main characters line at the end of the opening, this line will read "this is my story"

There will be the lines of the race regulators, one will read "please sign this" the other will read "yea, all good hear".

There will also be an over voice of commenting of a race, we will either find un-copyrighted material for some off it, but there will be parts in which we will need to pre-record are own voices or others to make it more believable as are driver has a specific name that must be said in-order for the race to seem genuine.

The pre-recorded voices must say, "and welcome to the 1995 ..... final, which is held at silver stone race track"  "and here come the racer the whole crowd has been rooting for, James Parker"
"And young Parker is coming to the last corner" "here he is and.. Oh my god, James has crashed on the last corner, this looks bad guys, I can't see how young Parker can come back from this or even survive from it"

The parts that we may need to find un-copyrighted recordings for will be the cheering and maybe some suprised reaction for the crash. But the largest un-copyrighted recording that we will need, is the crash sound.

Planning: location scouting

Location Scouting
For our location, we needed somewhere that would portray a racing film straight away, and obviously a race track is the best best to do this. It was easy to organise as my school is right next to it, so we didn't need permission from Silverstone as we didn't actually go onto the track. This is a good area to film as there is a lot of space, which means we have a lot more options with the camera. Also, the Silverstone logo will let the audience know immediately that this is a car film as Silverstone is one of the most famous race tracks in the world. This also means we can film a car in it's stereotypical location, which will give the audience the idea that this is a car film.

The photo below is a picture of garages, where we hope to film in one of them. This may be hard as we'll have to ask if we're allowed to film in there, and even if we are, we'll need to scout it out first as we don't know exactly what they'll look like inside, as it might not be suitable for what we're trying to do, which is to create a silhouette of a man walking towards the light.

Planning: makeup

Make up
We have 1 character, but he'll be shown in different times, so the make up will help to portray an injury. We want him to have a burn on one side of his face, so to do this we'll need watch some tutorials, and this one seems to be the best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDjT9z6Spgw

We'll have to practise this before filming day so we know exactly what we're doing so we don't waste
time trying and probably failing to do it.

This image shows the look we're going for, it doesn't cover the whole face, as that would be a lot harder to
do, as well as more time consuming, and we don't have much time to do this. However, it does cover a majority
of the face and clearly shows a burn scar.

Planning: lightning

Lighting
We will be filming in a dark garage for most of it, but there will be natural lighting coming from behind, to create a silhouette so we can't see his face, which is the effect we want, so any more light will not show the silhouette. However, when he gets close to the camera at the end, we want to see his face, so we might need one light so we can see his scars etc. but nothing too drastic

Other than that, we'll be filming outside in the day time, so we won't need anymore extra light as natural light will be fine

Planning: legality of production

Risk
Car racing round the track, possibly could hit someone.

When
When crossing the track to film.

Planing
Make sure we look both ways and listen out for the car.

We have been given premition through the collage to film on the track on a set day.

Planing: casting

there is not much casting needed, the only cast member who needed an audition was the actor for the main character. Me and Alex have decided the I would play the main character, I have been in many school productions at my old school and I have done many drama and acting classes, this was enough  for both me and Alex to agree on me playing the main character.

There will also be some background characters, who do not really need and audition as they will not have any lines and will be there to mainly there to make the shots look busy and fill the empty spaces.

iconograpy in Rush

Analysis of the opening scene of “Rush”
Looking for iconography

The iconography of car action in this scene is very strong and shows up from the second the scene starts.

The scene starts with the tittle sequence, where there is a background of the sky, and the titles are appearing. While all this is happening the first iconography starts to make itself known, some mumbled voices start to talk and become more clear after a few seconds, it becomes clear that there racing commentary voices of past races. This signifies that the film has something to do with racing.

After the tittle sequence there are many more iconography’s and the most obvious of them all are the close up shots of the actual race cars, tis signifies speed, danger and implies the film is definitely about F1.

There are also many other icons such as the costume of both the main characters and the backup cast. The main characters both Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl are both wearing professional race jumpsuits, signifying professionalism and power in the sport.

And the background cast are the ones working there who are wearing yellow water prof overcoats, signifying that they are workers, and there are also paparazzi, who are all wearing normal cloth but all have cameras, this signifies that this is a well known sport.

iconograpy in dukes of hazard

Opening scene of dukes of hazard
Looking at the iconography

The iconography of a typical car action film in the opening scene doesn’t pop up till about a minute into the film, but when it does show up it shows up hard.

The first 55 seconds of this opening scene have no iconography of a typical car action film, but after that there is a clear and obvious piece of iconography, there is an orange 1960 Dodge charger that jumps into the shot. This signifies that this is a fast pace and dangerous race film.

After that there is the mid shot of the two drivers, where we can tell there both young, adventures and they’re both hillbillies. They are also working against the law, shown through a close up of moon shined alcohol in the back of the car.

There are then many shots of the car drifting in the dusty roads, this signifies that this is a fast and dare devilish film, which are all trates of an action/adventure film.

iconograpy in days of thunder

Opening scene analysis of days of thunder
Looking at the iconography

This opening scene starts straight off with iconography everywhere, as it begins with some early morning long shots of a race track, this immediately signifies to the audience that this is a racing film.

The scene carries on with the shots of the track, and now we have been shown shots of NASCAR’s and drivers. The drivers are all wearing professional race suits with sponsorship all over them, this signifies that there is a race happening and that this is a very competitive race.

The whole track has flags on the side lines, all showing of different companies, this signifies that this is a very important race, so something with a lot of action is going to happen.

action/adventure

There are many sub-genres for action, but the largest is action adventure.

Action adventure is the largest of them all. This sub-genre started to make itself known to the film industry in the 1970s.

The development of an action adventure film has been running since the 1970s, where it started of as a  small genre with not many films using it, to it being the highest budgeted film genre and most widely used within the film industry.

There are many iconography used in action/adventure, such as:
Props:
Guns
Swords
Explosives
Cars

Location:
Familiar places
Exotic places
Places the audience can relate to

Costume:
Scruffy/explore clothing
Suites (usually for the men)

One of the most famous action/adventure film series are the James Bond films, these films include all the traits of an action/adventure film. They all have a protagonist (James Bond), an antagonist, the helper (both the girls he meets and the M16 00’ program), explosions, cars, guns and swords.

Genre

Genre meaning  a specific category in film…

Films are split into genres such as:

Action adventure: action adventures usually include big budget, high energy and many explosions. They can also involve less explosions and more discovery and adventure.

Comedy: comedies are usually family friendly and are made to make the audience laugh.

Crime: crimes are usually full of mystery and sometimes adventure. The mystery is the part that the viewers like as it keeps them guessing through out the film.

Sci-fi: sci-fi films usually involve heroes, aliens and many other scientific and fictional characters. These films aren’t just made for the nerdy kids and the geeky kids, there made to get the audience thinking “what if”.

Drama: dramas are usually serious and this is where most of the “based on true events” films fall under.

Horror: horrors are made to scare the audience, and are made to invoke our biggest fears.

War: war films are mostly true events and are made to show the audience the true horror and disaster of war on both land and sea.

Westerns: westerns are one of the oldest and was one of the most used genres of the american film industry. Westerns are now becoming re-invented and a lot of film companies are spoofing them like
“A million ways to die in the west”.

analysis of the opening to The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

This film is quite a modern take on the 1974 film “The Great Gatsby”.

The opening scene to this 2013 film, is quite repetitive. It starts of with the tittle sequence, which is shown within 1920s art and in black and white. It then fades into colour and then goes black. This implies that this is a re-make of an older film, by going from black and white to full colour.

It then cuts to long shot of a lake in the night with one green blinking light in the distance. This sets the atmosphere which is dark, mysterious and very gloomy. Then a narrative voice starts and its telling us of its past and how everyone those days just partied and got drunk.
This sets the location as no-one who was poor could party all the time, so it must be set in a rich part of the city/town.

We aren’t really introduced to any characters yet but we have been introduced to the voice, telling us of what the times are like. So we can only imagine that the voice is one of the main charactors.

analysis of the opening of Forest Gump

Forest Gump

The opening scene for Forest Gump is a very famous film and holds one of the most famous lines in the film industry “momma always told me, life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what ya gonna get”. Sadly this doesn’t happen in the opening scene, but does happen just after.

The first thing the audience sees is the tittle sequence, this is happening throughout the whole of the opening scene. Whilst the tittle sequence is happening there is one very long tracking shot of a feather falling though a town till it reaches the the main actor (Tom Hanks)

The location of this scene is a friendly town and not a very big one as well. There is a distinct atmosphere of this scene, it is almost happy but at the same time its is quite depressive and sad.

analysis of the opening of limiless

Limitless

This opening scene is very fast paced and there is a lot that happens within the first 2 mins.

The tittle sequence is very basic and happens in a few seconds, there is a black screen and the names pop up with a diegetic bang every time. Then it all goes quit and the screen remains black. There is then a voice that says “obviously I miss calculated a few things”.

The screen then cuts to a large metal door and there are diegetic sounds of men shouting and banging loudly on the door. This sets the atmosphere as being threatening and already sets a point where a lot of action can happen.

We are also introduced to the main character. He is standing on the edge of a building and looks like he is going to jump of the edge. This signifies that there is some form of threat and is probably the men at the door!

my favourite film opening

My favourite film is “Pain and Gain”, I like this film as it is actually based on true events and is full of action, mystery and there is a bit of comedy in there too!

The opening scene of this film starts with the title sequence,  showing the viewer who is acting in the film, who produced and who edited this film.

The rest of the opening scene includes, many cuts and lots of different camera shots, such as long shots, mid shots, tracking shots etc.

The sound are mostly the same throughout the whole scene, with the diegetic sounds of the main actor breathing, shouting and the odd swear word, also of the cop cars and the sound of the actor
being hit by a car. And the non-diegetic sound of a slow almost up-beat tune playing

analysis of the opening to skyfall

Skyfall

This film starts off, as all Bond films do with the first scene from the film, with Bond appearing around the corner at then end of a corridor of a hotel, he then walks toward the camera into a small bit of light and we can see it is definitely james bond (Daniel Craig). This sets the atmosphere as strange and very tense.

The scene then goes onto a car chase, followed by a bike chase, followed by a fight scene on the top of a moving train. This is where bond gets shot in the chest and falls into the water below. This has the audience thinking “is bond dead”?

The scene then proceeds to the usual exotic tittle sequence. This sets a new atmosphere of  mystery and surprise.
